How to choose the correct pillow

PILLOWS

Pick the right PILLOW

  1. CHOOSE a pillow based on how it feels under your head, not how it feels in your hand.
  2. MAKE sure the pillow fills the natural curve between your neck and shoulders.
  3. TRY sleeping in a neutral position. Neutral means when your spine looks the same as it does when you stand upright and look straight ahead. When viewed from the back, a straight line could be drawn through the middle of the skull, neck and down the spine without any deviation. If your neck is twisted or your head drops towards the bed or is propped up too high, you’re no longer in a neutral position.
  4. STOMACH sleepers is not recommended as your neck remains twisted sideways during sleep. To break the habit, tape a squash or tennis ball to your pyjamas near your breast bone.
  5. BACK sleepers, pull the lower edge of the pillow as close as
possible to your shoulders so it fills the curve at the back of your neck and helps tilt your head back slightly. Back sleeping may also help reduce snoring.
  6. GENERALLY, back sleepers need a medium-to-low profile pillow and side sleepers need a medium-to-high-profile pillow.
  7. GIVE yourself a few weeks to get used to a new pillow as some people experience a level of discomfort when the level of support changes.
  8. LIKE shoes, the right pillow for you isn’t necessarily the right pillow for someone else. Don’t buy the same pillow as your partner because they liked it.
  9. CHOOSING a pillow should not be taken lightly. At back to sleep® we recommend a qualified Health Care Professional to assess your current pillow and support needs.
